St Mary's Church, Thorpe: Always a warm welcome for all.
On Sunday morning 4th July (8am, 10am & 11:30am) Father Damian, our Vicar, will be preaching about Inclusivity and what that means for our wonderful Christian community. Do join us in Church or online if you can.
This time of reflection upon our values and inclusivity is ahead of the next meeting of Thorpe PCC on Monday 19th July (Freedom Day!) when your Church Council will formally vote on joining Inclusive Church.
We debated this at a Parochial Church Council away day in 2016 but have not followed it up. 5 years on, following the Covid pandemic, and many challenges nationally and internationally around BAME and many other issues of diversity, I believe this is what God is calling us to do, to speak with a clear voice about the inclusive values we already hold. We are already in many ways, an inclusive Church, reflecting a diverse congregation and community and we should be positive about that, and since 2016 our parish vision has been, "Always a warm welcome for all."
Here is the Inclusive Church Statement of belief and values, which I'm sure we can all agree speaks of our existing thoughts as inclusive Christians in the Catholic Tradition of the Church of England:
“We believe in inclusive church – a church which celebrates and affirms every person and does not discriminate. We will continue to challenge the church where it continues to discriminate against people on grounds of disability, economic power, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, learning disability, mental health, neurodiversity, or sexuality. We believe in a Church which welcomes and serves all people in the name of Jesus Christ; which is scripturally faithful; which seeks to proclaim the Gospel afresh for each generation; and which, in the power of the Holy Spirit, allows all people to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Jesus Christ.”
